With the Qatar World Cup in mind, we had a closer look at the history of the geometry of the World Cup balls. Each of them has a story grounded in the time it was designed in and the place where the Word Cup was hosted. Read the article on LinkedIn.
Listed Building Consent for Abady House
We are delighted to share the news that we obtained Listed Building Consent for the complete upgrade of a flat in Abady House, which forms part of Grosvenor Estate in Pimlico. The social housing development, designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens, was built between 1929 and 1935.
During the historic research, we found that the bathtub was located in the kitchen in the original lay-out. At the time of its construction, a private bath was the luxury of upper-class households, while social housing blocks were conceived without them. As the culture around personal hygiene evolved, bathtubs found their way into more homes. However, lacking a dedicated space, often the most convenient place for the bathtub was in the kitchen, where it could be used for various purposes. Apart from personal cleaning it also served as a sink, draining board, laundry and worktop with its cover on.

Reformation Covent Garden completed
Our work with Reformation continues as their new flagship store opens in the heart of London. Situated in a Grade II listed building in Covent Garden, the shop welcomes customers under a historic skylight and vaulted ceiling. It offers a distinctive shopping experience through the extensive use of technology, while warm tones, natural materials and ample display of live plants tell the sustainability focused story of the brand.
Planning approval for Reformation Covent Garden
Guarnieri Architects successfully secured Planning, Advertisement and Listed Building Consent for the new flagship store of Reformation in Convent Garden. The retail unit is part of a Listed Building sited along King Street. The proposal includes the shop fit-out, alterations to the street elevation of the existing heritage building.
On site photography
Our projects are for people to use and experience. However, photography has become a crucial part of a practice promotion.
Photographing our recently completed hospitality project. I love these long days on site, searching for the right angle, waiting for the right light. Quintin Lake, the photographer, and I were studying architecture together at the AA and are long time friends. The shooting is also an opportunity for a nice catch-up.
Season's Greetings
Geodesic Christmas Tree, this year’s Christmas Card, is dedicated to architect Buckminster Fuller. One of the first futurists, Fuller's global thinking led him to coin the terms “Spaceship Earth” and “One-Town World", concepts that, as we learned during the pandemic, are still relevant today.
Reformation Redchurch Street completed
We share the first pictures of our retail project for Reformation which completed last month and is now trading. It is the second shop we designed for the LA based sustainable women's clothing brand in London. It is also our second project along Redchurch Street which we now feel part of. Thanks to LXA for providing PM and QS services and to TEP for acting as the M&E consultants.
Lexham Gardens completed
We share the first professional pictures of our completed hospitality project in Kensington. Operated by Cheval Maison, the two Victorian townhouses have undergone a complete refurbishment to upgrade and rebrand 30 serviced apartments.
On site!
Progress on site for our retail project in Shoreditch. Located in the Redchurch Street Conservation Area, the space will become the second London shop of Reformation, an LA based women's fashion brand with a focus on sustainability. The new shop will offer their vintage collection. We provided architectural design services, and helped them secure planning permission and advertisement consent.
On site!
Progress on our hospitality project on site. The steel for the rear extension is now erected in position. The rear of the 19th century building has been extended to accommodate a gym providing an additional service to the 30 apartments. The extension will have a contemporary look to avoid competing in appearance with the historic fabric of the host building.
New projects
New projects uploaded on our website. Reimagining Grosvenor Square; the first UK shop of Reformation, the LA based sustainable women clothing brand; the upgrade of a 1970 housing estate. See what we have been up to.
Season's Greetings
This year's Christmas Card pays tribute to the British mathematician John Horton Conway who passed away this year due to complication from Covid. We reinterpreted his cellular automaton 'Game of Life' invented 50 years ago to wish you a 2021 full of life!
On site
Site progress of our hospitality project. The works will reposition the existing Victorian building, sited within a conservation area in Kensington, to offer to the market 30 serviced apartments.
Back to the office?
After we finally regained our office we find out that we might have to go back to working from home. We learned so much from this experience: working remotely, using technology, winning work with virtual meetings. For us this became the opportunity to further develop our office culture and face the time we are living.
Balázs becomes associate
Guarnieri Architects is delighted to announce that Balázs Fekete has been promoted to associate. It has been over five years since he joined us, and he has proved invaluable over the years. An early adaptor, his interest in technology revolutionised the way we work. A great leader and a talented designer, he contributed not only to our work but also to our office culture. Thank you Balázs!
Help find the cure for COVID-19
While we work from home our computers in the studio are not slacking off. They are hard at work searching for a cure of COVID-19. Folding@home by Stanford University allows you to donate unused computer power to run simulations of the novel coronavirus to help find a cure.
Season's Greetings
This year's Christmas Card is inspired by OP Art. Optical art was developed at the Bauhaus and 2019 marked the 100th anniversary of its origins. We move into 2020 through an optical effect created by a field of abstract trees.
